Josh Armstrong

Josh Armstrong is Cryptic's inaugural Cryptic Associate, directing Cryptic's 2011 production Little Match Girl Passion, a music-theatre double-bill by composer David Lang. Little Match Girl Passion will premiere at Glasgow's Tron Theatre in November 2011.

Josh was born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA and studied at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, UK. Starting his career as a dancer, his works now span a wide range of disciplines from theatrical design to installations, collaboratively devised performances to direction of music-theatre works.

Most recent directing/design works include Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ Le Jongleur de Notre Dame for the Hebrides Ensemble and Radio, Le Spectacle for The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Josh worked as Assistant Director/Choreographer for Cryptic’s Confined Human Condition in 2009, having been awarded the Federation of Scottish Theatre’s Creative Assistant Bursary. He continued his role of Assistant Director/Choreographer on Cryptic’s 2010 production Orlando. In 2009 he was the visual designer for Phil Bancroft’s Home, Small As the World as part of the Edinburgh Jazz Festival.
