Tramway 24 – 26 February 2012
A festival (or salon) of experimental music, performance and discussions, variously concerned with the usefulness of nihilism, pessimism and negativity; it’s about the limits of thought and experience, and what we might consider to be ‘ourselves’. Together we’ll ask how do we make sense of experimental musicians, performance artists, cultural critics, philosophers and scientists who doubt identity, existence and experience?
Including performances from Dawn Kasper, Malin Arnell, Keiji Haino and discussions with Ray Brassier, Mark Fisher, Evan Calder Williams and neuroscientist Thomas Metzinger. Full programme info is available at www.arika.org.uk.

Over the last 30 years, the Kronos Quartet has constantly challenged the boundaries and conventions of classical music. The quartet line-up Haydn and Mozart knew is constantly put to the service of new work, drawing on the passions and encyclopaedic knowledge of Artistic Director, David Harrington.
From collaborations in their American homeland with composers such as Adams, Reich, Crumb and Glass, they have ventured far to work with musicians of many traditions and nations. In May 2011, Glasgow’s Concert Halls welcome them for a long weekend of music featuring new work by Steve Reich, one or two of those international collaborations, one of their famous family concerts and more.

200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes, presented by Hans Rosling, acclaimed Swedish medical doctor, academic, statistician and public speaker, presents a 200 year history of the world mapped out by life expectancy and wealth in a 4 minute film. What makes this such a fascinating watch is the use of cutting edge technologies to visualise such a vast quantity of hard statistical data. Hans' own interpretation of the data projects an optimistic view of the world's future too, which in these austere times, is a rarity in itself. Essential viewing!

...an art event taking place at our home of CCA Glasgow: Direct Serious Action is Therefore Necessary by Glasgow-based artists Joanne Tatham and Tom O'Sullivan, a new commissioned exhibition for CCA, developed and constructed as a specific response to the CCA, its function, history and architecture.
In common with many of Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan’s most significant projects, it is the choreography and curation of the pieces in the exhibition, rather than the pieces themselves, that should be seen as the work. The exhibition will work with and against the conventions of the CCA spaces, positioning pieces across the venue to reframe the experience of visiting the CCA: Direct Serious Action

Orlando Stage Manager Dan Ayling recommends....
Metropolis by Fritz Lang, recently re-released for the big screen in the UK this September. Catch it while you can!
Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist film in the science-fiction genre, produced in Germany during a stable period of the Weimar Republic, set in a futuristic urban dystopia. The film was produced in the Babelsberg Studios by Universum Film A.G. (UFA). The most expensive silent film ever made, it cost approximately 5 million Reichsmark and still astounds viewers today.

The Reith Lectures were inaugurated in 1948 by the BBC to mark the historic contribution made to public service broadcasting by Sir John (later Lord) Reith, the corporation's first director-general.
John Reith maintained that broadcasting should be a public service which enriches the intellectual and cultural life of the nation. It is in this spirit that the BBC each year invites a leading figure to deliver a series of lectures on radio. The aim is to advance public understanding and debate about significant issues of contemporary interest.
