A Space Where Sound is Visible…

Changing patterns of light and shadow give the sense of being immersed in a space sensitive to sound, where even a whisper causes a stir and loud claps invoke waves of light cascading across the room. Helmholtz, the first major installation from Wintour’s Leap, was presented at Sonica 2015, from October to December at the Glasgow Science Centre. It features a lattice of LED elements spread across an exhibition space, where the audience experience great waves of light travelling across the room as the LED’s are triggered by sound. Each LED light has been created by a 3D printer and illuminates when the sound pressure at its location reaches a certain level allowing the waves of sound created by the audience or musicians to become a visual display of direct beauty.

A truly interactive experience, Helmholtz engages children and families in the creative exploration of light and technology, whist also providing a mesmerising and reactive light for musical performances. Sonica presented two concerts within Helmholtz, by Maxwell Quartet and the Dunedin Consort.

Wintour’s Leap (Alan Martyn & Laurence Greed) produce art, music and sound works that combine electroacoustic composition with interactive technology. The creative partnership was formed in 2013, and brings together diverse skills and a passion for technology in art and music. Through their work Wintour’s Leap aim to produce meaningful interactive experiences that explore the relationship formed between technology and the physical world around us.
