Paper Nautilus - About

A sumptuously staged cantata - a magical journey into the deep sea...

The Paper Nautilus explores the beauty and rich biodiversity in the deep underwater realms of our planet, including the scientific phenomenon of bioluminescence, through a partnership with Lux Biotechnology. Composer Gavin Bryar’s dramatic cantata is scored for soprano, mezzo-soprano, two pianos, six percussion and is entirely concerned with the sea’s depths, its mysteries and its science. The libretto is by contemporary poets Jackie Kay and Etel Adnan. A show of haunting theatrical beauty, with musicians, singers, and conductor continually submerged in changing lights, ghostly or fluorescent, brilliantly engineered by lighting designer Nich Smith. Directed by Cathie Boyd, with a stunning film and costumes by designer and architect Pippa Nissen; choreographed by Hiroaki Umeda and conducted by Garry Walker.

A Cryptic/Paragon Ensemble co-production, commissioned by Tramway, Glasgow.

“Contemporary music meets cutting edge theatre meets science – it is an intriguing concept and the piece is gorgeously conceived.”
